INSPECTION
Bonding is the inspection that matters.
A balance-of-system installation is a set of parts that must be electrically continuous as well as mechanically sound, and continuity is what cannot be seen.
Illustrative inspection checklist
- Continuity
- Measured between tray sections, not assumed through the fixings
- Fixing grade
- The correct grade for the atmosphere, confirmed on the part
- Dissimilar separation
- Washers present where the drawing calls for them
- Stand-off
- Measured on the installed bracket, because it is the cooling path
- Vent filters
- Present, correctly seated and recorded as a consumable
- Coating
- Intact after installation, with touch-up where it was cut
- Torque
- On structural fixings, recorded per connection type
- Marking
- Batch identifier legible on the part or its packaging
An illustrative checklist for a fictional range. A real programme defines the tolerance, the sampling method, the inspection window and the remedy if a batch fails.
The four things a programme needs in writing.
The tolerance, the sampling method, the window in which inspection happens, and what happens if the batch fails. Without all four, a failed delivery becomes an argument rather than a process.
Why continuity is measured rather than assumed.
Because a coated part does not conduct through its coating. A tray run bolted through powder coat looks bonded and is not, and the fault appears at the first insulation test rather than at installation.
