FASHION / FICTIONAL RANGE

A garment is bought on appearance and returned on fit.

SEAMLINE is a fictional fashion range covering folded knits, hangers and woven labels. The site is organised around sizing and care rather than the look: a size grade is a measurement decision made before anything is cut, and the care label is a legal document in most markets.

A stack of four folded knits in cream, lilac, grey and white, a wooden hanger with a metal hook, and a woven label with a swing tag.

Three items, and what each one is decided by.

Each item in this range is settled by something other than how it looks: a size grade, a shoulder angle or a regulation.

Item

Folded knit

A folded fine-gauge knit, presented as it arrives from the factory. The fold is the specification: it is how the garment is measured, packed and re-folded in a shop.

Item

Hanger

A wooden hanger with a metal hook and a trouser bar. It is the point at which the garment is presented, and it is bought separately from the garment.

Item

Woven label

A woven centre-back label with a stitched border. It is a legal document as well as a brand mark, because the fibre content and the care symbols are on it.

What a lookbook cannot decide.

Four things that belong to the grade, the mill or the market rather than to the design.

The size grade
The measurements each size is cut to, and the tolerance around them
The shrinkage
What the garment does after the first wash, which changes the grade
The care label
Fibre content and symbols, which are regulated rather than chosen
The fold
Because a stack of garments has to be the same size on a shelf
Why the grade comes first.

Because it is decided before anything is cut, and changing it later means re-cutting every size. A grade that is wrong for a market is not a sewing problem and cannot be fixed at the machine.

What this site cannot tell you.

Whether a garment will fit a particular body. That is established by trying it, and by a grade that was built from real measurements rather than scaled from one.
