DOCUMENTS
What travels with a garment order.
A garment arrives with paperwork or it arrives as a carton of clothing. These are the documents worth asking for, and what each one establishes.
- Size chart
- The measurement for each point and each size, with tolerances
- Fibre declaration
- Names and percentages, as they appear on the label
- Shrinkage record
- Measured at the stated wash, and the allowance built from it
- Colour fastness record
- Tested against a standard, not judged by eye
- Care label proof
- Symbols and wording, checked against the market requirement
- Inspection report
- Measured against the chart, with the sampling method stated
- Revision statement
- Which grade the order was cut to, and which sizes it covers
- Packing specification
- Fold, polybag and carton, because they are all specified
An illustrative list for a fictional range. A real programme agrees which documents are required, in what form, and how long they are retained.
The one that is most often missing.
The shrinkage record. A grade that does not state what the garment does after washing describes a garment that exists only in the sample room, and the customer measures it after the first wash.
Why the care label proof matters.
Because the label is regulated. A proof that was not checked against the market's requirements is a printed claim, and reprinting a label means reworking the stock it is already sewn into.
