EYEWEAR / FICTIONAL RANGE

A frame is bought to a face measurement.

OCULINE is a fictional eyewear range covering acetate frames, metal frames and hard cases. The site is organised around fit and the lens rather than the frame's appearance: a frame that does not fit is returned however good it looks, and in most markets the lens is a regulated article rather than an accessory.

An acetate frame with dark lenses, a thin metal wire frame with clear lenses, and a clamshell case with its lid open.

Three items, and what each one is decided by.

Each item in this range is settled by something other than how it looks: a measurement, a material property or a regulation.

Item

Acetate frame

A milled and polished acetate front with a keyhole bridge. The material is the fitting: acetate can be heated and adjusted to a face, which metal cannot.

Item

Metal frame

A thin wire front with adjustable nose pads and a sprung hinge. Metal is stronger per gram and does not take a bend to the face.

Item

Hard case

A clamshell case with a lined interior and a hinge that holds. It is judged by whether the frame survives being carried, not by how it looks on a shelf.

What a catalogue cannot decide.

Four things that belong to the wearer, the market or the workshop rather than to the product.

The fit
Three measurements against a face, and a frame either suits it or does not
The lens
Power, material and coating, and in most markets a regulated article
The adjustment
Whether the material can be brought to the face, or only the pads can
The market
Which standard the lens has to meet, and who is qualified to dispense it
Why the fit comes first.

Because it is the reason frames are returned. A frame that is comfortable and suits the face is kept; one that slips, pinches or sits too low is returned regardless of the material or the price.

What this site cannot tell you.

Whether a frame will suit a particular face. That is established by trying it, and by a dispenser measuring the three dimensions that matter.
