DOCUMENTS
What travels with a batch of frames.
A frame arrives with paperwork or it arrives as a bag of parts. These are the documents worth asking for, and what each one establishes.
- Material declaration
- Acetate type, and whether the frame is cut or moulded
- Plating certificate
- Thickness in microns on plated frames, because that is the wear life
- Measurement record
- Lens width, bridge and temple length, across the batch
- Symmetry record
- That the frames were checked for twist, not only for size
- Lens conformity
- Which standard the lens meets, and who dispensed it
- Coating specification
- Which layers, and in what order, on a coated lens
- Revision statement
- Which revision the batch was made to, and which lens it takes
- Case specification
- Shell and lining, because the lining touches the coating
An illustrative list for a fictional range. A real programme agrees which documents are required, in what form, and how long they are retained.
The one that is most often missing.
The symmetry record. A batch can measure correctly and still contain twisted frames, because the measurements are taken on one side. Twist is what the wearer notices and what a measurement sheet will not show.
Why the case belongs on the list.
Because it is the only thing standing between a coated lens and a bag. A frame supplied with an unsuitable case returns as a scratched lens, and the lens is the expensive part.
