BUYING

What a quotation needs in order to be a quotation.

Most eyewear enquiries stall because the buyer has a look and no measurements. This is the list worth completing before the first message.

The measurements
Lens width, bridge and temple length, because they decide the fit
The material
Cut acetate or moulded, and which metal
The finish
And whether it is a layer over the material or the material itself
The lens
Which standard, and whether the frame is supplied glazed or empty
The quantity and the split
By colour and size, because a block is cut per colour
The market
Because the lens standard and the labelling differ by country
The adjustment
Who brings the frame to the face, and with what
The case
Because it is what protects the coating the customer paid for
Why the measurements come first.

Because they decide whether the frame can be sold at all. A frame that does not suit the market's faces is returned however well it is made.

The most useful sentence in an enquiry.

"This market returns anything narrow, and the frames are dispensed glazed." It tells the supplier which sizes to quote and what the lens has to meet, and it is the sentence most enquiries leave out.

Why written beats verbal.

The expensive conversations in a programme are the ones about what was agreed. A brief that exists only in a meeting leaves every disputed detail open.
