PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Pallet wrap
A machine-grade stretch film on a core. The specification is the stretch rather than the thickness, because stretch is what holds the load.

How it is made.
The film is cast and wound onto a core, with the tail secured. The stretch percentage is what decides how much film a pallet uses, and a thicker film that stretches less can cost more per pallet.

Every value above is an illustrative example for a fictional range. It is not a quotation, a capability statement or a measurement of any real product.
Why thickness is the wrong number to buy on.
Because a pallet is held by tension, not by thickness. A thinner film that stretches further holds the same load with less material, and the cost per pallet is what the buyer actually pays.
What the tail decides.
Whether the roll can be started without waste. A tail that is not secured unwinds in storage, and the first few metres of every roll are discarded.
