INSPECTION
A seal is checked by peeling it, not by looking at it.
Protective packaging is inspected for the properties that only appear in use: seal strength, stretch and tear behaviour.
Illustrative inspection checklist
- Seal strength
- Peeled after conditioning, not judged by eye
- Adhesive coverage
- Continuous across the flap, with no dry ends
- Film gauge
- Measured across the roll, because it varies edge to edge
- Stretch
- Measured on the machine, at the declared pre-stretch
- Core diameter
- Because it decides whether the roll fits the machine
- Print registration
- Within tolerance, on the substrate it will actually run on
- Tear edge
- Clean and even, tested on the roll rather than on a sample
- Marking
- Batch identifier legible on the roll or its carton
An illustrative checklist for a fictional range. A real programme defines the tolerance, the sampling method, the inspection window and the remedy if a batch fails.
The four things a programme needs in writing.
The tolerance, the sampling method, the window in which inspection happens, and what happens if the batch fails. Without all four, a failed delivery becomes an argument rather than a process.
Why the gauge is measured across the roll.
Because film varies from edge to edge. A single measurement at the centre describes the middle of the roll and nothing about the edges, which are where a machine wrap fails.
