GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence a protective packaging project follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The contents
- Size, weight and whether it has a sharp edge
- 2 · The packing station
- Rate, bench space and who is doing it
- 3 · The void
- How it is filled, and how the contents are held still
- 4 · The journey
- Transfers, stacking, humidity and duration
- 5 · The material
- Chosen for the load, then for the packing method
- 6 · The machine
- Because the setting is part of the specification
- 7 · The print
- Process first, then artwork, then a proof from that process
- 8 · The inspection
- Seal strength after conditioning, and stretch on the machine
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a material before the packing station is choosing a film for a machine nobody has looked at, and choosing print before the substrate is choosing a colour that may not be achievable.
Where projects usually go wrong.
Step two, skipped, and step six, not passed on. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover after a peak season.
