PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Pendant shade
A spun brass dome on a cord, with the source recessed inside. The recess is the design, because it is what keeps the lamp out of the field of view.

How it is made.
The dome is spun and the rim is rolled, then the interior is finished to throw light downwards rather than sideways. The depth of the recess is what decides whether the fitting glares when it is seen from across a room.

Every value above is an illustrative example for a fictional range. It is not a quotation, a capability statement or a measurement of any real product.
Why the recess depth is the specification.
Because a source in the field of view is uncomfortable however good the light is. Recessing the lamp costs nothing and is the single decision that separates a fitting people keep from one they replace.
What a photograph cannot show.
How the light lands. The same fitting at two different drops produces two different pools of light, and neither is visible in a picture of the shade.
