GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence an eyewear programme follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The face
- The three measurements the frame is chosen against
- 2 · The fit
- Lens width, bridge and temple length, before anything else
- 3 · The material
- Chosen for how it adjusts, then for how it wears
- 4 · The finish
- And whether it is a layer that can wear through
- 5 · The lens
- Which standard, and who is qualified to dispense it
- 6 · Centration
- Which depends on the fit, not on the frame alone
- 7 · The case
- Because it protects the coating, which is the costly part
- 8 · The market
- Because labelling and standards differ by country
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a lens before the fit is choosing a centration for a frame that has not been placed on a face, and choosing a finish before the material is choosing a coating for something that may not need one.
Where programmes usually go wrong.
Step two, skipped, and step six, assumed. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover after a frame has been glazed.
