SEASON
A year outside is the only test that counts.
A garden object is bought once and left out. What follows is the order in which the weather attacks it, and the design decision that answers each stage.
- Autumn · wet
- The object soaks. Whether it can dry out decides everything after this
- Winter · frost
- Water in the material freezes and expands. This is where most objects split
- Spring · thaw
- Repeated freeze and thaw opens a crack that a single frost would not
- Summer · sun
- Ultraviolet fades colour and heat stresses coatings and root zones
- Year two
- The same cycle again, on a material that has already been weakened
Illustrative season record
| Stage | What is tested | How it is tested |
|---|---|---|
| Water uptake | How much the body absorbs | Weighed dry, soaked, weighed again |
| Freeze and thaw | Whether the wall survives cycles | Repeated cycles, not a single freeze |
| Colour stability | Whether it fades in one summer | Exposed to light for an equivalent period |
| Coating adhesion | Whether a chip spreads | Scratch, then expose |

Why a single freeze proves nothing.
Because the damage accumulates. An object can survive one winter and split in the third, and a test that runs one cycle describes only the first.
The question worth asking instead.
How many freeze-thaw cycles the object was tested through, and what the water uptake was before them. A supplier who can answer that has tested the object rather than the material.
