GARDEN OBJECTS / FICTIONAL RANGE

These live outside. The weather decides them.

LOAMWORKS is a fictional garden range covering tapered planters, trough planters and stacking storage crates. The site is organised around the season rather than the season's styling: frost, standing water and ultraviolet light act on these objects for years, and a studio photograph shows none of it.

Three garden objects on a pale surface: a terracotta tapered planter, a white stone trough on feet, and a sage stacking crate.
Original 3D render · fictional appearance concept

Three objects, three ways the weather gets in.

Each object in this range fails differently outdoors, and in each case the design decision that prevents it is small and easy to leave out.

Object

Tapered planter

A thrown-profile pot with a rolled rim and a single drainage hole. It lives outside all year, so what decides it is frost and standing water rather than its shape.

Object

Trough planter

A rectangular trough on feet, for hedging and herbs. The feet are the whole design: without them the base sits in water and the wall fails first.

Object

Storage crate

A stacking crate with handle cut-outs, for tools and pots. Stacking is the specification: the lip has to carry a loaded crate above it.

What a studio photograph leaves out.

Four things that decide a garden object and that no picture of it will show.

Frost
Whether water inside the material freezes and splits it
Standing water
Whether the base sits in it, and for how long
Ultraviolet
Whether the colour survives two summers or ten
Weight when wet
Whether it can be moved once it has been rained on
Why frost is the first question.

Because it is the one that breaks things. A material that holds water and then freezes will split, and whether it holds water is decided by the surface and the drainage rather than by the material name.

What this site cannot tell you.

Whether an object survives your winter. That depends on the climate it stands in, and it is established by leaving one outside rather than by reading a page.
