REVISION
A change to a mould is a change to every object after it.
In a garden range a small revision has a long reach, because the object stays in service for years and replacements are bought against the same drawing.
- Revision letter
- Every change, however small, gets one
- What changed
- The feature, the value and the reason
- Who asked
- The change came from somewhere, and that is worth recording
- When it took effect
- Which batch was the first made to the new revision
- What it supersedes
- Which revision the new one replaces
- Replacements
- Whether a new object matches one bought three years ago
| Rev | Change | Reason | First batch |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | Wall thickened at the base | Frost damage on the first winter | Example · batch 3 |
| B | Drainage hole enlarged | Standing water on paving | Example · batch 5 |
| C | Feet raised 20 mm | The base stayed wet | Example · batch 7 |
Why replacements belong on the log.
Because a garden range is bought once and added to. If a revision changes the colour or the profile, an object bought later will not match one already in place, and the customer will see it immediately.
The habit worth copying.
Recording which batch was the first made to the new revision. Without it, a batch sits between two revisions and nobody can say which drawing it was made to.
