GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence a garden project follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · Where it stands
- Open, sheltered, paving, roof · this decides the material
- 2 · The climate
- How hard the winters are, because frost decides the body
- 3 · Material
- Chosen for water and frost, then for appearance
- 4 · Finish
- Which is the layer doing the work outdoors
- 5 · Colour
- Against a standard, and whether batches may differ
- 6 · Size and weight
- Including weight when wet, because somebody has to move it
- 7 · Quantity
- Because a mould or coating run has a minimum
- 8 · The delivery window
- Because the season does not move
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a colour before the material is choosing a finish for a body that has not been decided, and choosing a size before the position is choosing an object for a place nobody has looked at.
Where projects usually go wrong.
Step one, skipped, and step eight, assumed. A range that arrives after the planting window is a range that waits a year.
