PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Placket
A folded strip with button stands and a hem tape. The placket is where the garment closes, and where a closure either works or does not.

How it is made.
A folded strip stitched and topstitched, with button stands positioned relative to the fold. The stands are set before the strip is attached, because the fold is the reference the buttons are positioned from.

Why the stands come before the strip.
Because the fold is the reference the buttons are positioned from. Marking stands after attaching the strip positions them from wherever the strip happened to land.
What a photograph cannot show.
The spacing drift. Five stands each a millimetre off is a placket that closes and a garment that does not sit square at the collar.
