MATERIAL
Six materials, and what each one is chosen for.
Apparel materials are chosen for drape, recovery and shrinkage, in that order. A material chosen for appearance alone is a material chosen for a photograph.

Illustrative material record
- Combed cotton
- Bodies · 180 gsm, spun for hand and low pilling
- Dark cotton
- Panels and sleeve caps · takes pigment and shows wear at the seam
- 1x1 rib knit
- Neckbands, cuffs and hem tape · recovers, and it is what closes a garment
- Cotton twine
- Seams and labels · pliable, and it is the seam that fails where it rubs
- Ceramic buttons
- Closure · crush resistant, and it is the stand that fails before the button
- Spun polyester thread
- All seaming · 50/3, chosen so the stitch outlives the fabric
Illustrative examples for a fictional range. Material selection depends on the fabric weight, the fit and the wash regime, and is confirmed against a specification rather than a web page.
Why the rib is specified separately.
Because it is what closes the garment. A neckband or cuff in a rib that does not recover opens the whole garment, and the failure is a garment that stops fitting without anything tearing.
Why the thread is a 50/3 and not a 40/2.
Because the stitch has to outlive the fabric. A lighter thread cuts the seam allowance before the garment is worn out, and the seam opens where the fabric is intact.
