GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence an apparel programme follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The block
- Which pattern and which revision, because the run is graded from it
- 2 · The fit
- Ease and balance, because a chest measurement is not a fit
- 3 · The fabric
- Weight, grain and shrinkage, because a pattern is for one fabric
- 4 · The steps
- Chest, shoulder and sleeve on their own, because they differ
- 5 · The tolerances
- Per garment rather than per nominal
- 6 · The finishes
- Rib and recovery, because they are what closes a garment
- 7 · The screening
- Which sizes, because the ends of a run are what fail
- 8 · The inspection
- Twist and stand spacing, laid flat
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a fabric before the block is choosing a pattern for a weight nobody has agreed, and choosing a finish before the screening is choosing a closure for a run nobody has verified.
Where programmes usually go wrong.
Step one, treated as a size, and step five, quoted per nominal. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover once a run is cut.
