UPPER STUDIES / 01
Read beneath
the surface.

01 / DEVELOPMENT NOTE
Smooth upper direction
Separate the surface appearance from the underlying material. Request the declared substrate, finish method, thickness reference and backing proposal. Ask for edge and crease observations on a representative assembled sample.
- Keep the upper supplier reference and revision.
- Identify the edge finish intended for exposed straps or seams.
- Request the evidence appropriate to the destination and intended use.
02 / DEVELOPMENT NOTE
Suede upper direction
Use a physical swatch with its viewing orientation recorded. Request substrate, thickness and nap-direction information. Ask how paired panels will be compared and how an accepted material lot will be identified.
- Mark the direction used for the visual review.
- Record approved reference and sample lot together.
- Ask about colour transfer observations and needed testing.
03 / DEVELOPMENT NOTE
Woven canvas direction
Request the fibre declaration, weave and backing proposal rather than inferring composition from the image. Discuss cut-edge handling, facing reinforcement and the line where the upper meets the bottom unit.
- Record fabric, backing and reinforcement as separate references.
- Ask whether assembly changes the intended appearance.
- Keep a made sample alongside flat material references.
