PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Sport wrap
A single shield lens in a thick frame with straight temples. The wrap is the specification, because a lens that curves is a lens that fits a face differently.

How it is made.
The frame is moulded and the shield is cut and shaped to the base curve. A wrapped lens has a base curve of its own, and the prescription that can be cut into it is limited by how much the curve already bends the light.

Why the base curve limits the prescription.
Because a curved lens already bends light before the prescription does. Past a certain curve the power cannot be cut without the lens becoming thick and distorted at the edge, so a wrap is a frame some prescriptions cannot use.
Why straight temples are not a style choice.
Because they grip the head rather than resting on the ears. At speed a hooked temple moves, so a sport frame is held by pressure along the side of the head instead.
