FOCALINESport eyewear / demo

DEMO — fictional range. Local brief only, NOT SENT. No personal data is collected or transmitted.

MATERIAL

Six materials, and what each one survives.

Sport eyewear is chosen for weight, impact and corrosion, in that order. A material chosen for appearance alone is a material chosen for a photograph.

Six material samples: titanium, two sport greys, a lime accent, a dark lens and gold.
Original 3D render · fictional appearance concept

Illustrative material record

Beta titanium
Rimless mounts · light and springy, and it holds a thin section under load
GRP polyamide
Wrap frames · tough and light, and it moulds to a curve
Polycarbonate lens
Impact resistance · the standard for sport, and it is soft enough to scratch
Trivex lens
Impact and optical clarity · better dispersion than polycarbonate
Rubber compound
Nose and temple grips · stays grippy when wet, and it ages in sunlight
Stainless A4
Fixings · resists sweat and chlorides, where A2 does not

Illustrative examples for a fictional range. Material selection depends on the activity, the environment and the prescription, and is confirmed against a specification rather than a web page.

Why impact material is soft.

Because the property that resists impact is the same one that scratches. A hard lens is more scratch resistant and more likely to shatter, so sport lenses are soft and coated rather than hard throughout.

Why the fixing grade changes with sweat.

Because perspiration is corrosive. A stainless grade that is adequate in a dry climate corrodes at the temple fixing, which is the part touching the skin.
