DOCUMENTS

What travels with a batch of frames.

A frame order arrives with paperwork or it arrives as a bag of parts. These are the documents worth asking for, and what each one establishes.

Material declaration
Frame material and lens material, because both decide the impact result
Impact certificate
Which standard, and on which lens and thickness
Base curve record
The curve as made, because it limits the prescription
Prescription range
What the frame accepts, stated rather than inferred
Coating specification
Which layers, in what order, and the adhesion result
Balance record
Where the mass sits, because it decides whether the frame moves
Revision statement
Which revision the batch was made to, and its prescription range
Case specification
Shell and lining, because the lining touches the coating

An illustrative list for a fictional range. A real programme agrees which documents are required, in what form, and how long they are retained.

The one that is most often missing.

The prescription range. A frame has a curve that limits what can be cut into it, and a document that omits the limit leaves the dispenser to discover it at the edging bench.

Why the impact certificate names a thickness.

Because impact is a property of material and thickness together. A certificate for a lens at one thickness does not describe the same lens ground thinner.
