Rimless mount

A rimless mount that holds two lens edges between a bridge and two end pieces. Nothing surrounds the lens, so the edge is the specification.

How it is made.

The bridge and end pieces are machined and the lens is drilled or clamped. Because no rim protects the edge, the edge finish and the hole position are what decide whether the lens cracks from the fixing.

Why the edge is the specification.

Because a rimless lens has no rim to spread the load. Every force from the fixing and from the temple arrives at the edge, and an edge that was finished badly is where the lens cracks.

The weight and the balance. A rimless frame looks light and can be front-heavy, and a front-heavy frame slips forward during exactly the activity it was bought for.
