Lens blank

A semi-finished blank with a finished front curve and an unfinished back. It is the raw material of a prescription, not a product in itself.

How it is made.

The front curve is moulded or generated and polished, then the back is left for the prescription to be cut into it. The blank’s own front curve decides which prescriptions it can carry.

Why the front curve matters more than the diameter.

Because it is already built into the lens. A blank with the wrong front curve cannot be cut to the prescription without becoming thick, heavy or distorted, whatever its diameter.

What the index changes.

Thickness and weight, at the cost of colour fringing. A higher index makes a thinner lens and disperses colour more, which shows at the edge of a strong prescription.
