COMPONENT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Circular connector
A metal-shell circular connector with seven contacts on a ring. The shell is the keying and the seal, so the contact layout is the easy part.

How it is made.
The shell is machined, the insert moulded into it and the contacts fitted from the rear. The keyway is cut into the shell, which is what stops two similar connectors mating in the wrong orientation.

Every value above is an illustrative example for a fictional range. It is not a quotation, a rating or a measurement of any real component.
What a datasheet rating does not describe.
The joint it is part of. A connector rated at a current is rated in a defined test arrangement, and the same connector in a different housing with a different crimp can run hotter at half that current.
What it cannot show either.
Whether the crimp was made properly. The joint is inside the barrel, and a bad one looks exactly like a good one from outside until it heats up.
