GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence a mounting project follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The site
- Location, height, exposure and atmosphere
- 2 · The roof
- Type, pitch, zones and structure
- 3 · The load case
- Wind uplift, snow, thermal and seismic
- 4 · The layout
- Zones and obstructions before module count
- 5 · The components
- Rail section and span, clamp and fixing
- 6 · The fixings
- Grade for the atmosphere, depth into structure
- 7 · The calculation
- Against the code, signed by someone qualified
- 8 · The as-built
- Because the roof and the drawing differ
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a rail before the load case is choosing a section for a load nobody has calculated, and choosing a layout before the roof zones is designing for the wrong pressures.
Where projects usually go wrong.
Step three, assumed, and step eight, not recorded. Both are cheap to do properly and expensive to discover after an array is on a roof.
