DEMO — fictional range. Local brief only, NOT SENT. No personal data is collected or transmitted.

RANGE

Three parts, and the reference each is built from.

The range covers stepped shafts, milled housings and drilled mounting plates. Each part page carries the feature everything else is measured from and the questions worth settling before a drawing is issued.

Original 3D render of a stepped spindle shaft.

Part

Stepped spindle shaft

Three diameters turned from bar with a keyway flat and a threaded nose. Concentricity between the bearing seats is the whole specification.

Part

Milled housing

A pocketed housing with a through bore and four mounting holes. The pocket floor and the bore axis are what the assembly is built from.

Part

Drilled mounting plate

A flat plate with a six-hole pattern and a raised bronze boss. Position of the pattern against the boss is the only dimension that matters.

How the range is organised.

By the reference the part is built from rather than by the machine that makes it. A shaft is built from its axis; a housing from its bore; a plate from its boss.

Turned parts
Built from an axis · concentricity and roundness decide the part
Pocketed parts
Built from a bore or a floor · the other is referenced to it
Drilled patterns
Built from a centre · position against that centre, not against an edge
Fitted parts
Built from the mating component · the fit decides the tolerance
