MATERIAL
Six materials, and what each one is chosen for.
Material is chosen for the load and the environment, then for what can be machined and finished. A material picked for machinability alone is a material picked for the supplier rather than the part.

Illustrative material record
- 42CrMo4 steel
- Shafts and stressed parts · hardens well, machines slower than aluminium
- Bright mild steel
- General turned parts · inexpensive and predictable, corrodes without a finish
- 6082-T6 aluminium
- Housings and plates · good strength, machines cleanly, anodises well
- Satin anodised aluminium
- Where the surface is handled · hides marks better than bright anodising
- Bronze
- Bushes and bosses · low friction, dimensionally stable, costs more
- Nylon
- Light bushings and guides · quiet running, expands more with heat than metal
Illustrative examples for a fictional range. Material selection depends on the load, the environment and the finish, and is confirmed against a specification rather than a web page.
Why the heat treatment belongs on this page.
Because it changes the part after machining. A shaft that is hardened after turning will move, and a drawing that specifies a tolerance without saying whether it is measured before or after heat treatment is a drawing that will be argued about.
What certification covers.
That the material delivered is the material specified, traceable to a heat or batch. It does not cover whether the specification was right for the part.
