PLANAXISPrecision machining / demo

DEMO — fictional range. Local brief only, NOT SENT. No personal data is collected or transmitted.

MATERIAL

Six materials, and what each one is chosen for.

Material is chosen for the load and the environment, then for what can be machined and finished. A material picked for machinability alone is a material picked for the supplier rather than the part.

Six material samples on a bench: bright steel, dark steel, aluminium, satin aluminium, bronze and white nylon.

Illustrative material record

42CrMo4 steel
Shafts and stressed parts · hardens well, machines slower than aluminium
Bright mild steel
General turned parts · inexpensive and predictable, corrodes without a finish
6082-T6 aluminium
Housings and plates · good strength, machines cleanly, anodises well
Satin anodised aluminium
Where the surface is handled · hides marks better than bright anodising
Bronze
Bushes and bosses · low friction, dimensionally stable, costs more
Nylon
Light bushings and guides · quiet running, expands more with heat than metal

Illustrative examples for a fictional range. Material selection depends on the load, the environment and the finish, and is confirmed against a specification rather than a web page.

Why the heat treatment belongs on this page.

Because it changes the part after machining. A shaft that is hardened after turning will move, and a drawing that specifies a tolerance without saying whether it is measured before or after heat treatment is a drawing that will be argued about.

What certification covers.

That the material delivered is the material specified, traceable to a heat or batch. It does not cover whether the specification was right for the part.
