SIZING
A pet good is sized for the animal, not the room.
Sizing is the one place a pet good is genuinely simple: it is derived from the animal. What is stated is the animal and the tolerance, not the floor it sits on.
- Animal weight
- Because a bed rim leans or it does not at a given mass
- Sleeping posture
- Curled or extended, because it changes the area needed
- Headroom
- Above the cushion when the animal is lying flat
- Step-in height
- For the young and the old, because it is a real barrier
- Bowl reach
- Depth against the muzzle, because a deep bowl is the one complaint
- Stand footprint
- Because a bowl must not slide and must not be stepped over
Illustrative sizing record
| Property | Set by | What changes it |
|---|---|---|
| Animal weight | The rim and its fill | A fill that compresses after washing |
| Posture | The inner area | A cushion that migrates fill |
| Step-in height | The rim height | A revision to the rim |
| Bowl reach | The bowl depth | A revision to the bowl body |

Why the animal weight comes first.
Because it is the only figure that predicts whether a rim holds. Everything else on the list is comfort, and comfort is negotiable in a way a collapsed rim is not.
The question worth asking instead.
How the rim holds after the stated wash regime. A supplier who has only tested it new has described a bed an animal meets once.
