PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Bolstered bed
A cushion sunk in a raised rim, so an animal has a wall to lean against and a floor to lie on. The rim is the specification, because it is what gets leaned on.

How it is made.
A quilted outer with a removable cushion inside. The rim holds its shape through washing, which is the only test it actually fails, and the cushion is the part that wears.

Why the rim height is the specification.
Because an animal leans against the wall rather than the floor. A rim that collapses turns a wall into a mattress, and the failure only shows after the first wash.
What a photograph cannot show.
The loft after washing. Fill either recovers or it does not, and the difference is a bed that still has a wall and one that does not.
