PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE

Upper panel

A cut vamp with a seam allowance and two eyelet flaps. The panel is the pattern, and the pattern is where the fit is actually decided.

How it is made.

The vamp is cut in a single piece with the seam allowance left on, and the flaps are eyeleted before the panel is closed. Cutting before the eyelets move puts every hole in the wrong place.

Why the eyelets come before closing.

Because the holes are positioned relative to the panel, and closing the panel moves the reference. Eyeleting last puts every hole where the pattern intended rather than where the seam put it.

What a photograph cannot show.

The pairing. A left and right panel can cut within tolerance and still differ in how they close, and the difference is a shoe that sits straight on the last.
