DOCUMENTS
What travels with a run of components.
A footwear component order arrives with paperwork or it arrives as a bag of parts. These are the documents worth asking for, and what each one establishes.
- Material certificate
- Grade and thickness, traceable to the batch
- Last specification
- The five measurements and the tolerance each is held to
- Size record
- Which sizes were measured and how many pairs of each
- Pairing record
- Left against right, because a per-nominal tolerance does not cover it
- Bond test record
- Strength and how it was measured, on samples
- Weight record
- Per pair, because a stack that gains weight has drifted
- Revision statement
- Which last revision the run was graded from
- Interchangeability statement
- What the component fits, and what it does not
An illustrative list for a fictional range. A real programme agrees which documents are required, in what form, and how long they are retained.
The one that is most often missing.
The pairing record. A tolerance quoted per nominal leaves the one thing a wearer actually experiences, and it cannot be reconstructed after the pairs are boxed.
Why the bond record is a strength and not a yes.
Because a bond either holds or it does not. A statement that the sole is attached describes a join; a strength figure describes how much load it takes.
