PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Shoe last
The form a shoe is built on. Every panel is cut and lasted against it, so the last is the specification the rest of the shoe is measured against.

How it is made.
A wood and resin last with the toe spring, the waist and the heel curve that a shoe takes from it. Two shoes made on different lasts may share a size designation and fit nothing alike.

Why the last is the specification.
Because every panel is cut and lasted against it. A change to the toe spring or the waist moves every panel, so the last is the only drawing that can change and the rest follow.
What a photograph cannot show.
The fit. Two lasts of the same length and girth can differ across the instep and the ball, and the difference is a shoe that fits and a shoe that does not.
