GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence a footwear programme follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The last
- Its revision and its measurements, because everything is cut against it
- 2 · The foot
- Length, girth and instep, because a size hides the instep
- 3 · The activity
- Because it decides where the last loads
- 4 · The materials
- Abrasion, flex and moisture, in that order
- 5 · The tolerances
- Per pair, because pairing is what is worn
- 6 · The bond
- What strength, verified how, because it is what fails first
- 7 · The revision
- Which last revision the run was graded from
- 8 · The inspection
- Bond line and pairing, on a defined sample
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a panel before the last is choosing a pattern for a shape that has not been agreed, and choosing a material before the activity is choosing an abrasion life for a use nobody has named.
Where programmes usually go wrong.
Step one, treated as a size, and step five, quoted per nominal. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover once a run is cut.
