PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE

Ribbon IDC

An insulation-displacement connector for ribbon cable. It terminates ten conductors in one operation, which is the whole reason it exists.

How it is made.

The body is moulded and the contacts are pressed in, then the cover is fitted. Termination is one press that drives every contact through its conductor, so the tool and the press depth are part of the specification.

Why the press depth is the specification.

Because one operation terminates every contact. Too shallow and one conductor is not displaced; too deep and the contact is deformed. Neither is visible afterwards, which is why the tool is part of the drawing.

What a photograph cannot show.

Whether the conductors are displaced correctly. An IDC joint is made inside the body and cannot be inspected without destroying it, so it is qualified by the tool and by a pull test on samples.
