INSPECTION
Press depth and pull-out are the two checks.
A board connector is inspected at the bench rather than in service, because the joint it makes cannot be seen afterwards.
Illustrative inspection checklist
- Press depth
- Measured against the tool setting, on the first and last of a run
- Pull-out force
- On samples, per the declared table for the cable used
- Conductor alignment
- Conductor one to pin one, checked before termination
- Coplanarity
- Pin height across the row, because a lifted pin misses its socket
- Insulator
- Free of flash at the pin entry, which would displace a contact
- Plating
- Present and undamaged by the press
- Shell continuity
- Measured on shielded parts, because the bond is the function
- Marking
- Batch identifier legible on the part or its packaging
An illustrative checklist for a fictional range. A real programme defines the tolerance, the sampling method, the inspection window and the remedy if a batch fails.
The four things a programme needs in writing.
The tolerance, the sampling method, the window in which inspection happens, and what happens if the batch fails. Without all four, a failed delivery becomes an argument rather than a process.
Why coplanarity is on the list.
Because a pin that sits high does not enter its socket, and the connector still looks seated. It is a moulding and pressing issue rather than a contact issue, which is why it is checked separately.
