GUIDE

The order the questions are worth asking in.

This is the sequence a board-connector project follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.

1 · The joint
What mates, and which half is fixed to the board
2 · The signal
Speed, and the returns per signal
3 · The current
Per contact, and how many are loaded at once
4 · The cycles
Because that decides the plating, not the price
5 · The termination
Mass-terminated or discrete, and which tool makes it
6 · The tooling
Who owns the press setting and how it is controlled
7 · The screening
Whether the shell bonds, and how that is measured
8 · The inspection
Press depth and pull-out, on a defined sample
Why the order matters.

Each step constrains the next. Choosing a plating before the cycles is choosing a life for a joint nobody has counted, and choosing a connector before the returns is choosing an interface for a signal that has no path back.

Where projects usually go wrong.

Step one, treated as a footprint, and step six, left to the line. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover.
