MATERIAL
Six materials, and what each one is chosen for.
Packaging materials are chosen for strength per gram, then for how they print. A material chosen for its appearance alone is a material chosen for a photograph of an empty pack.

Illustrative material record
- Single wall corrugated
- Light parcels · inexpensive, prints well, limited stacking strength
- Double wall corrugated
- Shipping cases · takes stacking load, heavier and bulkier to store
- Kraft liner
- Unbleached outer · strong and printable, colour varies between batches
- Grey board
- Rigid boxes · stiff and dense, does not print, so it is wrapped
- Moulded pulp
- Insert trays · holds parts apart, nests for storage, low tooling cost
- White board
- Presentation packs · prints accurately, marks easily before wrapping
Illustrative examples for a fictional range. Material selection depends on the journey, the load and the print, and is confirmed against a specification rather than a web page.
Why strength per gram is the number.
Because packaging is bought by weight and by volume. A material that is stronger but heavier costs more to ship and takes more warehouse space, so the comparison is never strength alone.
What a board grade does not tell you.
How the finished case performs. The grade describes the board; the score lines, the dimensions and the fill decide the case.
