GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence a packaging project follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The contents
- Size, weight and whether it can move
- 2 · The journey
- Distance, transfers, stacking and humidity
- 3 · The pack type
- Which layer takes the load and which stops the movement
- 4 · Internal dimensions
- And the tolerance around them, after conditioning
- 5 · Board grade
- Chosen for the load, with the liner named for print
- 6 · The print
- Process first, then artwork, then a proof from that process
- 7 · Tooling
- Cutting forme or mould, and the lead time it carries
- 8 · Inspection
- What is checked, how many, and under what conditions
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a board grade before the journey is choosing a strength for a load nobody has estimated, and choosing a print process before the substrate is choosing a colour that may not be achievable.
Where projects usually go wrong.
Step two, skipped, and step six, approved on screen. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover.
