SEASON
Two summers is where the failures appear.
A garden product is bought once and left outside. What follows is the order in which the outdoors attacks it, and the design decision that answers each stage.
- Summer one · sun
- Ultraviolet acts on the stabiliser and on the seals
- Autumn · wet
- The product is used less and stands wet for longer
- Winter · frost
- Water in a joint or a hose expands and splits it
- Spring · use
- The product is used again, and the damage from winter becomes visible
- Summer two
- The same cycle on a material that has already been weakened
Illustrative season record
| Stage | What is tested | How it is tested |
|---|---|---|
| UV exposure | Whether the moulding stays flexible | Exposed to light for an equivalent period, then loaded |
| Frost resistance | Whether a wet joint survives freezing | Filled, frozen, then operated |
| Seal ageing | Whether a gasket still seals | Aged, then pressure tested |
| Handle fatigue | Whether the fixing loosens | Loaded repeatedly at full weight |

Why the second summer matters more than the first.
Because the material has already been weakened. A product that survives one summer has proved very little, and the returns arrive in the second.
The question worth asking instead.
What the moulding does after an equivalent ultraviolet exposure, and whether it is still flexible. A supplier who can answer that has tested the material rather than the product.
