GUIDE
The order the questions are worth asking in.
This is the sequence a garden product follows when it goes well, and the point at which each step becomes expensive to revisit.
- 1 · The use
- How far it is carried, or how often it is emptied
- 2 · The full weight
- Because that is what is lifted, not the capacity
- 3 · Where it is stored
- Because the outdoors ages it whether or not it is used
- 4 · The material
- Chosen for water, frost and ultraviolet light, then for appearance
- 5 · The joints
- Because the joint that holds water is the joint that fails
- 6 · The consumables
- Filters and gaskets, and whether they can be replaced
- 7 · The finish
- And whether it is a film that can lift
- 8 · The inspection
- Including the joints, checked wet rather than dry
Why the order matters.
Each step constrains the next. Choosing a material before the storage is choosing an ultraviolet grade for a product that may live in a shed, and choosing a finish before the material is choosing a coating for something that may not need one.
Where products usually go wrong.
Step two, assumed, and step five, left to the moulding. Both are cheap to settle and expensive to discover after a season has shipped.
