Hose reel

A wall-mounted reel with a crank and a swivel inlet. The swivel is the part that fails, because it is the joint that moves every time the reel does.

How it is made.

The drum is moulded, the flanges are fitted and the swivel is assembled with a seal. The swivel is the only joint that rotates under pressure, and it is where a leaking reel leaks.

Why the swivel governs the life.

Because it is the one joint that moves under pressure. Every other connection is static, and a static joint does not wear. The reel is replaced because the swivel drips, not because the drum failed.

What the material has to survive.

Ultraviolet light, because the reel lives on a wall in the sun. A drum that is strong but not stabilised becomes brittle in two seasons and cracks at the flange.
