PRODUCT / FICTIONAL EXAMPLE
Compost caddy
A lidded bench caddy with a removable inner bucket. It holds food waste indoors for a few days, so the seal and the ventilation decide it.

How it is made.
The body and lid are moulded, the inner bucket is separate and the handle is fitted through the lid. The lid seal is what keeps the contents from being noticed, and the ventilation is what keeps them from becoming unpleasant.

Why the seal and the vent are both needed.
Because they do different jobs. The seal stops the contents being visible and keeps small insects out; the vent lets the contents break down without going anaerobic, which is what produces the smell.
What the customer replaces.
The filter, and whether it can be replaced at all is a design decision. A caddy with a sealed-in filter is a caddy that is thrown away when the filter is spent.
